Elders as Earthkeepers

We have just completed an informative six-week discussion course focused on an emerging role for elders in care for the Earth and future generations. The course concluded with each of us sharing our individual practices and initiatives toward caring for the Earth and identifying some initial steps that we could take towards becoming a “green” congregation.
Individual Practices and Initiatives
• Reduce driving by sharing rides, using public transportation, walking if possible, vote by mail.
• Reduce consumption, e.g.donations as gifts (Heifer International, Nature Conservancy)
• Teach others about nature, e.g. grandchildren, etc.
• Reduce water consumption, e.g. full loads - dishwasher & washing machines, save and re-use water.
• Buy locally produced foods, support CSA’s, share gardening produce, raise herbs & veggies on balcony instead of geraniums.
• Reduce magazine subscriptions.
• Re-use – buy from thrift shops.
• Reduce energy consumption by turning off lights, using low energy bulbs, lower thermostat.
• Repair broken items when possible.
• Composting paper towels & leaves (vs. blowing them), worm box, etc.
• Recycle paper, plastic & all reusables; involve grandkids.
• Participate in Puget Sound Energy Wind and Solar Power program.
• No baking in microwave.
Collective Actions for “Greening” our Church
• Research, design and establish church recycling system.
• Research ways church can be more energy efficient re: low-energy lighting and water efficiency of toilets.
• Promote environmental stewardship as a non-partisan effort.
• Ride sharing, particularly to evening programs.
• Contribute article to this newsletter re: care for the Earth.
• Keep a record of books, magazine articles, audio & videos about environmental stewardship & encourage family, friends, church & club members to use them.
• Care of the landscape in an environmentally sensitive way.

Everyone is invited to participate in individual practices. We will keep you informed of ways of participating in the collective actions of greening our church as the research and plans unfold. Another five-week Elders as Earthkeepers course is planned starting in January.

I invite you to come into the circle. Imagine yourself as a participant in this virtual circle, to create a setting in which our minds, bodies and spirit can connect with each other. The focus question for this first of many circles is “How do we form circles of care for the Earth and future generations?” Who will come and what will be their response?

Let me share some recent experiences I have had that give me hope and courage to expand the circles of care. A year ago, I invited members and friends of my community, Songaia, to join me in an 8-session discussion course on Discovering a Sense of Place using the curriculum created by Northwest Earth Institute. There were about 10 of us who showed up each time we met. We took turns opening and closing the circle as well as facilitating the discussions. The discussions reconnected some of us to places of origin as well as to Cascadia, the bioregion in which we currently live. It provided us with some shared common images and the sense that we were commited to develop a common ethic towards the sacred land on which we live as well as to the bioregion.

We decided to do another course the next quarter on Exploring Deep Ecology. Again we had 8 to 12 of us showing up each time we met. We invited more from outside the community this time and it helped enrich our discussions. The topics were more challenging and more controversial which helped deepen our individual and collective understanding. We were also beginning to develop a common language.

The next quarter, in late Spring, we did the 5-session discussion course on Elders as Earthkeepers, developed by Imago for the Earth. This attracted more elders from outside the community. In a follow-up session to this study, a group of about 8 decided to meet monthly and form ourselves as Earth Elders. One of our first projects was to co-sponsor an Awakening the Dreamer Symposium with Edith Kusnic, one of our members, facilitating the event. Another member, Jim Clark, led a circle with 7 sessions on Cosmic Evolution. This was an integration of science and spirit based on the Universe Story and provided rich dialogue for the 7 participants.

This last quarter, I approached the church I attend, Kirkland UCC with a proposal to do the Elders as Earthkeepers course. The church board, pastor and Education director decided to sponsor the course and we have had 6 to 9 participating each session.We will end this course with an invitation for those who are interested to become Earth Elders of Kirkland UCC, commiting to being stewards of the earth individually and to collectively lead the church in becoming “green”.
